Clean Water, Better Hygiene, Brighter Futures

By chalana kushan | Project Leader

1. Project Overview

With the generous support of our GlobalGiving donors, Sathkara Social Service Foundation supported the renovation and improvement of the water supply and handwashing facilities at Rajawaka Maha Vidyalaya in Balangoda, Sri Lanka. The intervention focused on replacing old and damaged taps and improving water access points used by students for handwashing and daily school activities.

2. Background & Need

The school’s existing water facilities had several old, worn and damaged taps and fittings. The condition of these facilities made regular use less convenient and created a need for safer, more reliable water access points. Improving basic water and hygiene facilities is an important part of creating a healthier and more comfortable school environment, particularly for children.

3. Project Objectives

Improve access to water at key points around the school.

Replace old and damaged taps and fittings with new, functional fixtures.

Improve handwashing facilities used by students.

Support better hygiene practices within the school environment.

Contribute to longer-term recovery and resilience through improvement of essential school infrastructure.

4. Work Completed

The project team assessed the existing water access points and carried out improvements to the school’s water supply facilities. The work included replacement of visibly old and damaged taps, installation of new taps at selected locations, and improvement of the student handwashing area. The completed facilities were tested to confirm that water was flowing through the upgraded taps.

5. Results & Impact

Students now have improved access to functioning water taps for handwashing and daily use.

The renovated handwashing area provides a more practical and comfortable facility for students.

Replacing damaged fixtures reduces leakage and the inconvenience caused by faulty taps.

The improvement supports better personal hygiene practices among schoolchildren.

The upgraded facilities provide a longer-lasting benefit to the school community.

6. Beneficiaries

The primary beneficiaries are the students and teachers of Rajawaka Maha Vidyalaya, who use the improved water and handwashing facilities during the school day. The upgraded infrastructure is intended to provide an ongoing benefit to the wider school community.

7. Donor Appreciation

Every contribution makes it possible for us to respond to practical needs in communities affected by disasters and to support recovery beyond immediate relief. We sincerely thank our GlobalGiving donors for their generous support and for believing in our mission.

Together, we are building healthier schools, stronger communities, and brighter futures.
