Summary

The St. Croix Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is a cooperative body that is made up of representatives from faith-based, non-profit, government, business and other organizations working within St. Croix to assist individuals and families as they recover from Hurricane Maria. The goal of the LTRG is to unite recovery resources with community needs in order to ensure that even the most vulnerable in the community recover from the disaster.

Challenge

According to current estimates, some 3000 territory residents will need Disaster Case Management (DCM) assistance followed by Unmet Needs support of the territorial Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG). One of the greatest issues confronting the St. Croix community is the extensive number of damaged houses throughout the island still in need of repair. We are scheduled to receive an additional 1008 cases from St. Vincent DePaul-USA, by the end of June 2018.

Solution

Volunteer work teams from the US will assist to aid in our community repair/rebuild efforts. The United Methodist denomination has committed teams of 16 members each, to serve on two week rotations from June through September of 2018, to repair as many homes as possible. The LTRG accepted 389 DCM cases from an AmeriCorps initiative in March 2018, which is comprised of clients in need of home repair. The teams are repairing four homes concurrently at this time.

Long-Term Impact

The LTRG will provide disaster case management and recovery initiatives to 1000 + homes. The LTRG will have identified individuals and families with unmet needs in the community and provide them with case management in order to prioritize how those needs will be met by delivering goods, services and funds to meet those needs. Individuals and families will be more prepared for when the next disaster occurs.
