Summary

St Mungo's Painting and Decorating training project aims to give homeless people useful skills - offering them the chance to get work experience and helping to secure employment. Trainees who commit to the programme can expect to spend six to eight weeks learning a variety of skills. Those who successfully complete the programme are awarded an Open College Network qualification and given the further opportunity to work with our painting and decorating social enterprise, ReVive.

Challenge

A poor education is often a contributing factor to homelessness, while unmet physical and mental health needs can seriously compromise a person's employability. St Mungo's helps homeless people to overcome these barriers through education, vocational training, help with finding employment and engaging in meaningful activities - all of which play a key role in recovery from homelessness and are fundamental to our work.

Solution

St Mungo's Painting and Decorating programme has been running since November 2009 and was set up to help homeless people learn professional decorating skills and gain a recognised qualification. Trainees who commit to the programme can expect to spend six to eight weeks learning a variety of painting and decorating techniques and can go on to work on live projects with ReVive, the social enterprise arm of the programme.

Long-Term Impact

In 2010 / 2011 37 people took part in the programme with many more completing 'taster days'. 29 people achieved qualifications and 3 progressed onto other training. ReVive is helping many of our clients to gain valuable on the job training, work experience and new skills - and, most importantly, is helping them grow in confidence and self esteem and achieve sustained independence.
