In Nigeria, more than 3 million people live in displacement camps, with children making up over half of this number. Many are denied access to early learning, leaving them unprepared for primary education. This project will start a preschool for 500 children in IDP camps, giving them access to safe classrooms, trained teachers, school meals, and play-based learning. Early education at this stage is urgent to prevent long-term learning gaps and give these children a fair start in life.
Children in IDP camps face interrupted education, malnutrition, and lack of structured learning. Most do not have access to preschools, leaving them unprepared for primary school. Without early education, they face difficulties in literacy, numeracy, and social skills. Many are left unattended during the day as parents search for food or income. This gap in learning creates long-term disadvantages that reduce their chances of catching up with their peers.
The project will build and run a preschool centre for 500 children in IDP camps. It will provide trained teachers, learning materials, and daily meals to improve attendance and focus. The classrooms will use play-based teaching methods to build literacy, numeracy, and social skills. Parents will also be engaged through awareness sessions on the value of early childhood learning. This creates a safe environment where children can grow and prepare for future schooling.
Children who attend preschool are more likely to succeed in primary school and beyond. This project will reduce early learning gaps, giving IDP children a stronger foundation in literacy and numeracy. With better social and emotional development, they will be able to adapt more easily when resettled or reintegrated into formal schools. In the long term, these children will have improved chances of breaking cycles of poverty and displacement.
