A Look at Stella’s Journey
Just three months ago, little Stella arrived in Italy from Nigeria. Almost three years old, with wide curious eyes and a whole new world to discover, she settled with her mother in a local family home that reached out to us, knowing our commitment to inclusion.
When Stella first entered our Green Section, she was more than just a new child — she was a whirlwind of unchanneled energy. Although physically larger than her peers, her autonomy was still developing: she wore diapers and did not speak Italian. Communication with her mother happened in English, which made her integration and interaction with others more challenging.
Welcoming and Routines
From the very beginning, our educators worked with patience and care to create a safe, structured, and welcoming environment. Daily routines — morning greetings, snacks, playtime, lunch, rest — soon became essential reference points. Where there was once confusion, there is now rhythm and security: Stella recognizes the moments of the day, follows them with serenity, and participates with growing enthusiasm.
Learning and Autonomy
Through consistent and loving support, Stella made remarkable progress in a short time. She said goodbye to diapers — a fundamental step toward independence and self-esteem. Her fleeting attention span has grown: she now listens to animated stories, follows group activities, and shows genuine curiosity and focus.
Expression and Relationships
Perhaps the most touching change has occurred in her relationships. The child who once pushed others now plays alongside them, respects turns, and asks for help when needed. She has discovered the joy of sharing, of belonging, of being part of a group. In theater and psychomotor workshops, she explores her emotions through movement, transforming energy into expression and growth.
Looking Ahead
In just three months, Stella has bridged important developmental gaps, gaining social, emotional, and linguistic skills that will support her throughout life. Our goal now is to consolidate her progress, continue fostering her linguistic integration, and monitor the evolution of her communication in Italian.
Supporting children like Stella means not only fighting educational poverty but also building a more inclusive, welcoming, and cohesive society.
