A Mother’s Journey Across Borders
Fatou is the mother of two daughters, but her story began with a difficult journey. She crossed Africa and the Mediterranean with her first child, who was only one year old at the time. When she arrived in Lampedusa, she was already pregnant with her second daughter.
It was only in May 2023, after reaching a reception facility in Rome, that she finally felt a sense of relief. There, in a safer and more stable environment, her second daughter was born.
The Challenges of Starting Over
The long and difficult journey had left visible effects on Fatou’s eldest daughter. The little girl was very introverted and rarely spoke unless her mother was beside her. Building trust and expressing herself in a new environment was not easy.
The Role of the Nursery
A turning point came when both girls started attending the nursery. For Fatou, it was not just childcare but a safe and stimulating environment.
Gradually, her eldest daughter began to open up, interact with other children, and find her voice again. Seeing her daughters feel safe and supported gave Fatou the peace of mind she needed to focus on rebuilding her life.
Building a Future
With her children cared for, Fatou was able to learn Italian and attend a training course that qualified her to work as a housekeeper and caregiver.
Today she dreams of taking a cooking course, a passion that would allow her to share part of her culture.
Supporting Other Women
Grateful for the help she received, Fatou now supports other women facing similar challenges. By guiding and accompanying them, she helps other families find stability and begin their own path toward integration.
Her journey has become more than a personal success story — it has become a bridge for others.
