Summary

This project will provide Technical Information Technology training to educate and empower 25 young women from South African townships and informal settlements. They will graduate as Professional Computer Support Technicians and System Engineers with skills to service and repair computers, printers, mobile phones and other hand-held devices. By providing technical skills, the project will open doors to both employment or self-employment opportunities for young women in a field dominated by men.

Challenge

Young women in South Africa generally find it harder to access post high school technical education especially in Information Technology, a field where men seem to dominate. On the one hand, parents from poor communities with their scarce resources tend to favor the male when it comes to accessing post high school education. On the other hand, employers traditionally seem to unfairly favor men for technical jobs including Information Technology. For these reasons, women are at a disadvantage.

Solution

This project will provide tailored technical Information Technology courses to qualifying young women between 18 - 35 years. Training is conducted in learning environments specifically designed to empower learners with skills which will give them access to either employment or self-employment. Before graduation, some learners will be placed with employers to facilitate workplace learning while others will work in business incubation programs to prepare them for business.

Long-Term Impact

This Information Technology Technical Support program enables 25 young women build bridges from poverty towards sustainable livelihoods by providing professional skills and access to either employment or self-employment. The graduates will no longer be limited to jobs traditionally associated with women but will be able to earn decent livelihoods, significantly improve their living standards and that of their families and communities by generating income and even creating job opportunities.
