Summary

In June 2023, unemployment for young women in Colombia between 18 and 25 reached 22.9% and YOU can help us reprogram this reality! Makaia's Bootcamp offers women from vulnerable contexts hands-on technical and vocational training in code and programming to find employment in tech, and overcome the gender IT gap. Help us improve the economic prospects of 100 women by enhancing their chances of getting sustainable, high-paying jobs in the IT sector.

Challenge

In Colombia, about half of young people lack formal employment, with 67% being women. This exacerbates inequality and poverty, particularly impacting women who face additional consequences (unwanted pregnancy, sex trafficking) and limitations (caregiving duties, limited participation in certain fields due to stereotypes, and insufficient training and representation). Today, only 2 in 10 women pursue science and technology careers, and hold 17% of positions in this sector.

Solution

Colombia's tech industry needs 216,000 new professionals by 2023, but a talent shortage looms. To address this, we'll train 100 young women from low-economic backgrounds in IT, programming, and life skills through a 12-week mentor-led program where 80% of our graduates secure jobs within 3-6 months of completion. It includes networking, interview coaching, and portfolio building, and concludes with a virtual Demo-Day where participants showcase their portfolio to industry professionals.

Long-Term Impact

If we give 100 girls the right skills and opportunities with technology, they will become change agents in their communities, raise the voice of women and youth in technology and become role models for other youth. By aligning the training with the new opportunities in the IT job market, young women will have the opportunities to transform their life and the one of their communities. They will be able to find high-paid jobs that can promote social mobility.
