Summary

This project will help 100 indigenous families to fight hunger, boost household income, and increase resilience to climate change. Red COMAL is a network of small farmers, producers, and cooperatives working together to build healthier communities and a more equitable economy. As climate change continues to deeply affect livelihoods across Honduras, our mission is to help communities incorporate more holistic, sustainable farming practices through agroecology.

Challenge

Farmers in the Dry Corridor, an area across Central America known for harsh weather and inconsistent rains, are struggling to grow enough food to survive. Hurricanes, droughts, flooding, and extreme heat continuously decimate crops grown in modern agricultural systems, leaving thousands hungry and impoverished. These modern systems are not only weak against climate change; they also actively harm the environment through agricultural pollution and resource degradation.

Solution

Our project will help 100 families implement sustainable farming practices to stabilize food production in rural areas, increase household revenue, and develop a model for other families to become more self-sufficient and resilient in the face of climate change. Each participating family will receive vegetable seeds, fruit trees, egg-laying hens, agricultural tools, and construction materials as well as hands-on and virtual eco-friendly agroecological training to ensure their success.

Long-Term Impact

After the completion of this project, participating families will have the skills to continue their sustainable farming practices, scale up their production, and share their knowledge with others in their community. This project will serve as a blueprint that will be shared with other cooperatives and communities throughout Honduras, so more rural families can attain food sovereignty and have a fighting chance in the face of climate change.
