Dear GlobalGiving community and friends of the Fundación Patronato.
This is the story of Marina, one of the women we support thanks to your donations and generosity.
Marina is a 36 year old mother of two children, a 12 year old teenager and Matilde, 4 years old, diagnosed with Down syndrome and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss; together with her husband they were building a family in a humble home located in the municipality of Medellín in Colombia.
It was not easy for the family to accept Matilde's diagnoses, among myths and social signs they learned that the world is full of opportunities for everyone including their little Matilde, they found in institutions like the Fundación Patronado the opportunity for their daughter to have a better quality of life through comprehensive rehabilitation therapies, with this breakthrough their illusion of a happy family looked closer and closer.
After some time, the illusion of a united family, little by little was affected by constant arguments and fights with her husband, which produced a definitive rupture of the relationship at a time when Matilde was undergoing open heart surgery due to a heart failure, for Marina it was difficult to face this situation as she describes "alone", without the company of a man she considered her greatest support.
It has taken her a long time to mourn the loss of her husband, she has gone through difficult moments with her children and dedicated much of her time to them; taking care of them and watching them grow had become her greatest purpose. For several months, Marina has been part of a project of the Fundación Patronato, in which we strengthen the capacities of many women who, like Marina, have dedicated themselves to thinking about their family and have forgotten that they also need someone who cares for them, understands them and listens to them.
Today Marina describes herself as a woman with a desire to grow spiritually and professionally, she has discovered in herself previously unknown skills and this has prompted her to create an enterprise and generate new strategies for self-management. She is grateful to all the people who make it possible for many women like her to rediscover themselves through the Fundación Patronato.
