This project seeks to support girls and women in Mombasa County access: sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services; sanitary and dignity packs during Covid-19 pandemic; healthcare services, legal aid, and psychosocial care and support as a result of sexual-related and gender-based violence; and safe space and rescue centre after facing intimate violence from those known and close to them.
Covid-19 pandemic compelled the Government of Kenya to put in place containment measures such as closing schools and restricting movement. Therefore, accessing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services has become very challenging for girls and women, with so many teenage girls falling pregnant during lockdown. WHO reports that complications relating to pregnancy and childbirth are already the leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19 globally.
As the government continues to ensure the spread of COVID-19 is minimised, this project plans to mitigate the gendered fall-out for the pandemic that is affecting children and in particular adolescent girls in Kenya. This includes sensitising & encouraging communities to embrace sexual and reproductive health-seeking behaviours; providing sexual and reproductive health information and services through social media; and assisting girls and women disproportionately affected by the crisis.
The project will ensure 100% transition and completion of education by girls who are aware about their rights to sexual and reproductive health information and services. Mombasa County will witness reduced cases of sexual-related and gender-based violence as a result of a vibrant community protection mechanisms. Girls and women who are at the risk of intimate violence will have access to a safe house or rescue centre as they seek for justice against the perpetrators.
