On World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day (January 30th 2026), our volunteers mobilize to clean streets in slums, reducing breeding sites for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Over 1 billion people globally suffer from NTDs, with poor sanitation as a major driver. Urgent action is needed now as outbreaks surge in urban slums. This project raises awareness, improves hygiene, and protects vulnerable populations from debilitating diseases while promoting community health.
Neglected tropical diseases thrive in areas with poor sanitation. In Nigeria alone, millions live in slums where open waste and stagnant water create breeding grounds for NTD vectors. These diseases cause chronic illness, stigma, and economic loss. Limited public awareness and minimal local infrastructure make residents especially vulnerable. Without immediate action, infections will continue to rise, disproportionately affecting children and the poorest populations.
Our project mobilizes 50 volunteers to clean streets and remove waste, reducing breeding grounds for NTD vectors. Alongside clean-ups, we raise awareness about hygiene practices and disease prevention. By combining physical sanitation with community education, we prevent infections, empower residents, and create healthier environments. Immediate action on World NTD Day leverages global attention to amplify impact and inspire ongoing community participation.
Sustained street clean-ups and community education will reduce NTD prevalence, improve public health, and lower medical costs for vulnerable populations. Awareness campaigns foster lasting behavior change around hygiene and waste management. As communities adopt cleaner practices, children can attend school more regularly, families remain productive, and local governments are motivated to invest in sanitation infrastructure. The project strengthens resilience against NTDs for generations.
