Promoting Accountability and Safety : A Story of Protection and Change

Safe from bad traditional healing treatment

In the remote village of Dhainakot, Soru Rural Municipality, Mugu, a deeply concerning case of harmful traditional healing practices brought to light the urgent need for safeguarding and community accountability.

Suntali Budha (name changed), a 16-year-old girl, fainted near a riverside while visiting her sister’s home. Instead of seeking immediate medical care, her family took her to a local traditional healer. What followed was a disturbing incident: the healer used a hot iron spatula on her mouth and hands and even bit her neck, claiming he was driving out a “ghost” from her body. This caused severe injuries, including a swollen tongue and difficulty eating.

Two days later, Suntali was brought to the local health post where PHASE Nepal staff, who  provided emergency care. They cleaned her wounds, administered antibiotics, IV fluids, and pain relief. Her condition improved gradually, thanks to the timely and compassionate medical intervention.

This case triggered an immediate safeguarding response. Our team reported the case during internal meetings, initiating follow-ups and engaging with local stakeholders:

  • The ward chairperson was contacted and acknowledged the harmful nature of the incident. He committed to discouraging such practices and advised the healer to stop this work.
  • The health post in-charge confirmed the severity of Suntali’s injuries and also counseled the healer.
  • The school Principal expressed concern and promised to inform relevant stakeholders to prevent future incidents.

These actions reflect a broader shift toward accountability at the community level, where local leaders are now more engaged in protecting children from abuse.

“I didn’t think anyone would stand up for me. I felt scared and hurt. But when the PHASE sisters came, treated me, and asked how I was feeling, I felt safe. I now know what happened to me was wrong.” – Suntali Budha (name changed)

Moving Forward:

To prevent such incidents from recurring, PHASE Nepal is:

  • Strengthening safeguarding awareness through school and health post training.
  • Working with the municipality to develop by-laws against harmful traditional practices.
  • Creating local reporting mechanisms and involving women’s groups, girls’ group and child clubs in monitoring.

Thanks to your continued support, this case has become a turning point—highlighting the power of timely intervention and the importance of holding communities accountable for the safety of their children.
