In the remote village of Dhainakot, Soru Rural Municipality, Mugu, a deeply concerning case of harmful traditional healing practices brought to light the urgent need for safeguarding and community accountability.
Suntali Budha (name changed), a 16-year-old girl, fainted near a riverside while visiting her sister’s home. Instead of seeking immediate medical care, her family took her to a local traditional healer. What followed was a disturbing incident: the healer used a hot iron spatula on her mouth and hands and even bit her neck, claiming he was driving out a “ghost” from her body. This caused severe injuries, including a swollen tongue and difficulty eating.
Two days later, Suntali was brought to the local health post where PHASE Nepal staff, who provided emergency care. They cleaned her wounds, administered antibiotics, IV fluids, and pain relief. Her condition improved gradually, thanks to the timely and compassionate medical intervention.
This case triggered an immediate safeguarding response. Our team reported the case during internal meetings, initiating follow-ups and engaging with local stakeholders:
These actions reflect a broader shift toward accountability at the community level, where local leaders are now more engaged in protecting children from abuse.
“I didn’t think anyone would stand up for me. I felt scared and hurt. But when the PHASE sisters came, treated me, and asked how I was feeling, I felt safe. I now know what happened to me was wrong.” – Suntali Budha (name changed)
