The people of Londiani know what trauma is all about. They experienced it first-hand in June 2023 when 52 people lost their lives in a catastrophic road traffic accident at Londiani junction. It made headline news worldwide. Many of the dead and injured were taken to Londiani Sub-County Hospital which is close by. Staff fought relentlessly to save lives and many more lives would have been lost without their immediate response. This was under harrowing conditions and extremely limited resources.
Trauma is the leading cause of death worldwide. Londiani Sub-County Hospital provides a 24 hour service to assess and treat trauma patients. Resources for trauma management have always been stretched and this has worsened in recent years. The strain on hospital staff to treat patients is compounded by limited training, lack of trauma systems and a dedicated space in the hospital. Many patients have to be cared for on the floor of the out-patient area because there is nowhere else to put them.
This tragedy highlights the need for stronger trauma care services at Londiani Sub-County Hospital. Training for staff and community first responders in immediate management of trauma patients including training in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). A dedicated space at the hospital to assess and treat patients with dignity. Resources to equip this room providing beds with airway management and oxygen points, monitors for vital signs, PC for x-ray viewing and access point for mobile radiology
The term 'golden hour' is used in trauma to highlight that an injured patient has 60 minutes from time of injury to receive skilled care after which the risk of death or permanent disability increases significantly. Every second counts. This project increases the chances that the first person to come upon an accident will know how to respond. The injured will have skilled hospital staff close at hand to ensure lives are saved and life changing injuries are limited
