Urgent Support Needed for Indigent Cancer Patients

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We are seeking support for the Subsidized Cancer Treatment for Poor Patients project. At this time, no donations have been received. Without financial support, we are unable to begin providing treatment subsidies to patients who are waiting for help.

Cancer claims about 78,000 lives in Nigeria each year. Many of the poorest patients earn less than $2 a day. The cost of diagnosis, chemotherapy, scans, and medicines can exceed what a family earns in an entire year. Some patients sell property or borrow heavily, yet still discontinue treatment midway. When care is interrupted, the disease can worsen, pain increases, and survival chances decline.

This project will subsidize treatment costs for 20 indigent cancer patients. Funds will cover chemotherapy sessions, diagnostic scans, and essential medicines. Patients will also receive counseling and follow-up support to help them remain consistent with treatment schedules. Removing part of the financial burden can allow patients to continue care without interruption.

Steady access to treatment can reduce complications and improve survival prospects. Families will be spared extreme financial distress, and patients can focus on recovery rather than debt.

The long-term aim is to expand support to more low-income patients and reduce delays in care. With increased awareness about early detection and community participation, more families can seek help before the disease advances. Sustained assistance can contribute to improved cancer survival rates in Nigeria.

At present, no funds have been raised, and these patients remain without the support they urgently need. We kindly ask for your contribution to help us begin this life-saving effort.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
