Challenge

There were few opportunities for orphaned and disadvantaged children for outings, so classes at Champey Academy of Arts and its Summer Arts Camp provide a happy exposure to Cambodia's culture while building self esteem through dance, arts and music. Originally started as a summer program, Champey has evolved into a year round program serving disadvantaged children in the community, still offering a Summer Arts Program for disadvantaged local children and other children in our programs

Solution

Students learn the basic steps and stories of traditional Cambodian dances and music and have class room opportunities to demonstrate their achievements. We have added drawing and painting to the class offering students new ways to express themselves, and build self esteem and discipline. The new Champey program offers an opportunity to continue classes year round for these students.

Long-Term Impact

We have seen through our long history (since 1999) that this type of class in dance, music and art provides fun, education and friendship to orphaned and disadvantaged children and the discipline and accomplishment gained from participation in the program builds self esteem and allows these children to be better prepared for adult life. Over the years we have seen several of our students transform themselves from student to teacher and mentor as they themselves become the teachers.
