Update on Cambodia
Cambodia now enjoys a relatively enviable record with regard to fighting the pandemic, thanks to the Cambodian government’s very stringent policies to control and arrest the spread of the pandemic within the nation’s borders. Now, because of the nation’s very high rate of vaccination (80%+) and because the virus did not have the same sort of devastating impact in Cambodia as in some neighboring Southeast Asian nations, Cambodia is slowly but steadily reopening its economy and society to something resembling pre-pandemic conditions.
Nevertheless, the tourism industry, which before the pandemic provided nearly half of Champey Academy’s required revenues, has not yet begun to recover to any meaningful degree. In past years, our tour group reservation book would be full at this time of year. However, this year most days are completely blank, which means that for the tourism season (October through April) in 2021/2022, we can expect little, if any revenue to support the school.
In the early months of the pandemic we suspended all non-essential expenses and cut our staff’s salaries by 10 to 15% in order to preserve our cash. Now, as students return to Champey our teachers are working as hard as ever. The rapid rise in global inflation has begun to impact the cost of living in Cambodia and despite our dimished revenues and forecase, we have restored the pandemic salary cuts, with full salary in effect from November 1.
A new roof over our stage!
Before the start of the pandemic we had received a donation from a generous supporter in Canada for the specific purpose of replacing the deteriorating thatched roof over the audience seating area in front of our dance stage. The thatch was always a worry for a possible leak during heavy rains. With the agreement of the sponsor, we put that project on hold until the pandemic was controlled and we could foresee a day when the tourists would return to Champey Academy. Although we cannot hope for big groups of visitors in the coming few months, by removing the chairs from that space we were able to create another practice area for our often overcrowded dance classes.
We are hopeful that things will soon return to normal in Cambodia and that the tourists will return. In the meantime, with that in mind, this month our team got to work removing the old thatched roof and replacing it with a new roof composed of steel sheets on a brand new wooden frame. Attached are photos of our teachers and students installing the roof and a photo of the new roof, completed at a cost of $ 530. The labor and clean up of the old thatch was also provided by our teachers and students.
Champey Academy, provides free dance, art and music instruction to disadvantaged children and youth 6 days per week. Beyond the main goal of teaching our students about Cambodia's rich cultural heritage, the school also teaches the benefits teamwork, self discipline, and the merit and accomplishments achieved from hard work. The generosity of you, our donors makes this possible and we are deeply grateful to you for your generous and kind support.
