What new at Champey Academy of Arts

Dancing the Peacock Dance

Mark returned from Cambodia on  February 13 and brought some new photos.  During   the current tourism high season, our dance and music students and teachers have been invited by the Raffles Hotel in Phnom Penh to perform every Friday evening for their dinner guests.  The Raffles Hotel is one of the top hotels in Phnom Penh and we are very proud to have been chosen by them to provide the performers for their weekly “Apsara Dance Dinners” during this high season.

Our team each week consists of three teachers and about one dozen students from the music and dance classes at Champey Academy.   Over the course of two hours , the students  perform three dances. Each dance requires a time consuming costume change,  so during the breaks between dances, our singers keep the dinner guests entertained.
We are grateful to the Raffles Hotel for selecting our team for these important performance evenings.  The money which the hotel pays to Champey for each performance is shared among the performers who are delighted not only by the extra income which they receive but by the chance to demonstrate their skills, build their professional resume  and share their talents with the appreciative audiences at the Raffles Hotel each week. These students have spend long years of study and practice, by doing so , they are  keeping alive  traditional Cambodian  dance and music.  The continuing growth of the Cambodian economy coupled with Cambodia's increasing popularity as a tourist destination, has begun to create opportunities like these , providing  entertainment to the tourist industry.
This year, 2018, marks the 20th year that Kasumisou Foundation has been providing support and opportunity to disadvantaged children ,youth and families  through its various programs. Our original  dance program dates back to 2000. It is thrilling for us to see the growing success of these young artists .
None of this would have been possible without the generous support of you, our wonderful  donors. We can try  to express our gratitude with words,  but we truly hope that  the pride and joy shown in the faces of our young dancers and musicians will give you the " real story".
