African PRIDE Centre supports children in extra-ordinary circumstances, like survivors of forced marriage, orphans, children from abusive families, etc. to access education and skills training. Over 100 children have been reached, most of who have had their self-esteem renewed and their outlook toward life positively transformed. Due to our impact, we continue to receive overwhelming requests for support. 10 deserving girls have been selected for the support this year, at $500 for each girl.
Despite the anti-FGM law enacted in 2012, most girls in West Pokot are still forced to undergo the outdated cultural practice. Once cut, the majority are married off at a tender age while those who escape the knife and early marriage face the problem of support to continue with education, including lack of tuition fees, books, pocket money to buy sanitary towels to keep them in schools, etc. This makes many of them fall back from their educational pursuit to the dangers that they fled from.
African PRIDE Centre worked with a local church in West Pokot to put up a fairly low-cost school in the area. The school admits girls rescued from forced FGM and early marriage. To support girls referred to us by our community actors, we call out for support to enroll the girls in this low-cost school. We help pay tuition fees, buy books, give the girls some pocket money so that they can buy sanitary towels, and visit to encourage them and monitor their progress in learning.
This project will education at least 10 girls that have been referred to us after being rescued from forced FGM and early marriage, which will improve their life prospects and contribute to sustainable development in the area
