Each year, Teach for Taiwan (TFT) recruits and trains 130 teachers to work in schools located in remote and under-resourced areas. TFT aims to create a movement of lifelong leaders working to eliminate educational inequity in Taiwan, pursuing that all children, regardless of their background, can have access to quality education and opportunities to realise their full potential.
There are over 800 remote elementary schools in Taiwan, many facing resourcing challenges and risk closure. Students struggle academically at twice the rate of urban peers, with a three-year gap between the most advantaged and disadvantaged. The math ability gap between the top 10% and bottom 10% of students already exceeds six years, a difference that ranks first in the world (2022 PISA). To address educational inequity, it is crucial to prioritize support for these regions in need.
We recruit passionate young leaders to teach full-time in high-needs areas for at least two years. TFT Fellows complete over 500 hours of professional training to provide quality education to students in need. Beyond addressing the demand for teachers in disadvantaged areas, we build a network of influence to drive change. By fostering partnerships with local schools and communities, we work together to improve student outcomes, embracing the idea that "It takes a village to raise a child.
After two years, our program Alumni emerge with vision and deep understanding of the challenges on the front line. Some continue to work in schools, leading from the ground up, and some take on key roles in fields such as education policy and social innovation. We are building a network of educational institutes, equity-minded organisations, businesses, government bodies and passionate people to eliminate educational inequity in Taiwan.
