Support 20 Deaf-Blind Children in Goma: Act Now

Introduction

The “Listening and Solidarity” project aims to support 20 deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind children in Goma, North Kivu (DRC). These children live in extremely vulnerable conditions marked by instability, violence, and the absence of adequate support structures. Our initiative seeks to provide them with a safe environment, educational guidance, psychosocial support, and a real opportunity for inclusion.

Context and Challenges

In Goma, children with sensory disabilities are among the most marginalized.
They face isolation, social rejection, abuse, and a complete lack of access to education and healthcare.
Aggravating factors include:

• ongoing armed conflict,
• frequent consanguineous marriages in certain areas,
• the absence of adapted infrastructure,
• limited local resources.

The NGUVU YETU center, one of the few places dedicated to these children, operates with very limited means, making it difficult to support many of those in need.

Overall Objective of the Project

To provide these 20 children with the support they need to:

• learn to communicate,
• develop autonomy,
• access psychosocial assistance,
• benefit from a safe and caring environment,
• gradually integrate into their community.

Planned Activities

The project will strengthen the capacity of the NGUVU YETU center by:

• improving its basic reception infrastructure,
• training specialized staff for deaf and deaf-blind child support,
• ensuring appropriate psychosocial care,
• raising awareness among families and the community to reduce stigma,
• offering individualized follow-up based on each child’s needs.

We are currently in the phase of identifying trainers and learners.
The official project start is planned for November 2025.

1. Contexte et justification du projet

À Goma, dans la province du Nord-Kivu, en République démocratique du Congo, les enfants sourds, malentendants et sourds-aveugles comptent parmi les plus marginalisés. Ils souffrent d'exclusion sociale, de violence et n'ont pas accès à une éducation spécialisée ni à des soins de santé. Cette situation est aggravée par le conflit persistant et les capacités limitées des structures locales de soutien.

Les centres locaux comme NGUVU YETU , bien que engagés, manquent cruellement de ressources et sont incapables de répondre aux besoins de ces enfants vulnérables. Une action urgente, structurée et collective est nécessaire pour apporter un changement durable.

2. Objectifs du projet

Le projet « Écoute et Solidarité » vise à :

• Fournir un soutien éducatif et psychosocial à 20 enfants sourds-aveugles à Goma.
• Renforcer le centre NGUVU YETU par la formation, l’équipement et l’assistance technique.
• Sensibiliser la communauté locale à l’inclusion des enfants handicapés.
• Promouvoir une culture de respect, d’autonomie et de dignité pour tous.

3. Activités prévues

• Identification et formation d'éducateurs spécialisés (en cours).
• Sélection des 20 enfants bénéficiaires (en cours).
• Mise en place de modules pédagogiques sur mesure et suivi psychosocial.
• Amélioration des infrastructures et des outils pédagogiques de NGUVU YETU.
• Organisation d'ateliers de sensibilisation communautaire.

4. Budget et financement

Le budget total du projet s'élève à 5 000 USD .
À ce jour, 199 USD ont été collectés grâce à notre partenariat avec GlobalGiving .

Les efforts de collecte de fonds se poursuivent : chaque contribution nous rapproche de notre objectif. Grâce au soutien de GlobalGiving et à de nouveaux partenariats, nous sommes convaincus d'atteindre l'intégralité du budget d'ici le lancement du projet prévu en novembre 2025 .

5. Impact attendu

Ce projet aura un impact à long terme en :

• Offrir un avenir digne à 20 enfants oubliés.
• Établir un modèle local d’inclusion sociale et éducative.
• Renforcer les capacités locales pour soutenir un soutien à long terme.
• Engager la communauté autour de la question de l’inclusion du handicap.
