This project provides food, medical care and a safe home to 30 rescued donkeys, horses and mules who have been abandoned due to injuries, illness or old age in the Souss-Masaa province. While we acknowledge that working animals play a crucial role in people's livelihoods in Morocco, we offer urgent interventions, shelter and care to equines in need.
It is estimated that there are over 1.5 million working animals in Morocco. Unfortunately, when working animals become ill, injured or grow too old, they are often abandoned because their owners do not always have the necessary resources to offer medical care. There is a lack of facilities taking care of equines, which means that many end up suffering on the side of the road, without help. There is an urgent need to shelter and care for abandoned equines, providing safety, food and medical aid.
By providing shelter as well as medical care for injured and ill equines, we will be able to reduce the suffering of dozens of equines annually. In addition, through our interventions in the field, we gain more understanding and knowledge about reasons for abandonment, and can use this information to prevent abandonment and severe health issues in the future.
This project will secure long-term care for 30 equines while improving their quality of life, and as we expand this number will increase. The interventions in the field will help us build strong relationships with community members and local authorities and provide opportunities for education, with the long term goal of promoting animal welfare and responsible animal ownership to ensure the sustainability of our efforts.
