Asana's Journey: From Small Steps to Big Dreams

By Ernestina Esinam Glikpo | Communications Manager

Meet Asana, a 49-year-old rice processor and farmer from Baazu in the Ullo traditional area in Ghana's Upper West region. For years, Asana worked on a very small scale, processing rice just to get by. Things began to change when she joined Self-Help International’s microcredit program in 2023.

With her first GHS 500.00 ($44.6) loan, Asana processed rice, earned GHS 200.00 ($17.8) profit, and successfully repaid her loan. Encouraged, she took another loan, invested in her rice processing, and expanded into farming. The profits from her farming allowed her to buy maize to feed her family and even purchase five bags of cement to plaster her new store—a dream she had been working toward.

On her third loan of GHS 1,500.00 ($102), Asana has already repaid half and continues to process rice with the remaining balance. She proudly shares that she earns up to five bowls of profit per bag of rice she processes, providing a steady income for her household.

“The microcredit program is very beneficial to women in this community,” Asana said with gratitude. “We pray for continued partnership with Self-Help so more women can also benefit.”

Thanks to your support, women like Asana are not just running businesses—they’re building stronger families and communities, one loan at a time.
