Summary
This quarterly activity and status report on “support 320 orphans with goats project in Uganda”. The overall purpose of the project is to contribute to improved household income of OVC households to enable them secure Medical treatment, scholastic materials and other basic needs. The project is implemented in the districts of Kibuku, Budaka, and Pallisa and it is reliant on financial support from donors and the Community under the Global Giving platform. KADO is grateful to all donors and the community for the support that contributed to the realisation of these quarterly results.
Current Status
KADO is building the capacity of Orphans and other vulnerable children and their households in goats’ management through trainings, goats breeding, provision of advisory services and treatment and dissemination of she goats to the target 320 OVCs. Despite the above effort, many orphans and vulnerable children live miserable livelihoods. A total of 290 OVCs have not yet received the she goats and the number of OVCs that demand she goats is increasing from time to time.
The rate of breeding is low because of limited breeding she-goats and this has not enabled the project to attain much results.
In schools, 290 OVCs study without uniform, school meals and at times lack scholastic materials due to limited household income of the caregivers.
In the quarter (June to August), 2018, the KADO managed to execute the following:-
3.0 Challenges
Recommendations
KADO kindly requests all well wishers to be part of KADO and give a helping hand to this project for the socio-economic welfare of the OVCs in Kibuku and Budaka districts.
Success Story
This is a success story of Sharon aged 10 years, daughter of the late Mukama of Bulangira Sub-County. Sharon currently lives with her mother (widow) who is HIV positive and lacks sustainable income generation. To earn a living, Sharon was being used to sell local brew called ‘malwa’ and dropped out of school in primary three despite the Universal Primary Education programme in Uganda. The project Officer met this girl in the bar and when he asked her about her education status, she narrated her challenges with tears as she was stopped schooling by her mother in a bid to help the family source for income by selling the local brew. This ordeal touched the project officer and he advised Sharon to go back to school. However Sharon advised the project officer to meet the mother for consent. When the project officer met Sharon’s mother through discussion, the mother accepted Sharon to go back to school on condition that KADO provides support. KADO therefore enrolled Sharon and her mother to benefit from the goats project. Sharon was enrolled in school in primary four, in 2018 and given a she goat of which her mother looks after when she is at school. Sharon vows to study very hard to become a nurse. This is a true story of what happens to our OVCs in Uganda, particularly in rural communities.
