Summary

Kagumu Development Organization is hereby present its fifth quarterly report on support to 320 orphans with improved goats in Kibuku, Pallisa and Budaka Districts in Eastern Uganda. The organization acknowledges support of all partners that have given both financial, material and moral support to the project. Thanks are extended to global giving team for their organization of this system that has enabled us so far acquire 328 Dollars to support the project.

This is therefore a report submitted to stakeholders for their consumption indicating project progress.

The status of OVCs is still atrocious due to limited resources by the organization and this is coupled with the overwhelming number that the organization cannot afford to mitigate their vulnerability.

In that quarter, the organization provided inadequate support to OVCs and many still continue living in complex situation that exposes them to a lot of susceptibility like child labour, early sex and marriages among others.

Current status of Support 320 orphans with improved goats project

The organization economically empowers orphans and their guardians in improved gaots rearing as a means of raising incomes to  support the orphans.  Orphans were identified and listed accrding to geograhical areas(village, parish and subcounty). The organization mobilises funds, procure improved goats  and isseminate it to target orphans. It has so far mobilised funds and  procured so far 4 improved she goats that were provided to  4 orphnas. Orphans whose goat delivers, pass over the first she goat to another orphans in the same geographical area and this quarter two improved she goats were paased over to two orphans in agreement  that they will pass over one she goat to other orphans.

 In addition to the following activities were implemented in the  quarter to support orphans and their households:

1. Conducted visits in only 5 primary schools and provided psychosocial therapy and support to 28 orphans. However, OVCS were still faced with problems of lack of scholastic materials and meals at school.   
2.  Conducted supervision and monitoring visits to 9 families that received agricultural in puts from the sub county under NAADS programme to ascertain project progress. However the project activities were going on well in only 5families that were harvesting ground nuts. Other families planted late and their gardens were affected by the prolonged dry spell.

Challenges

1.  Limited financial resource is the Major challenge in this project. The organizations’ major source of income is from donor funding and it has not acquired a potential donor for the project activities.  
2. OVCs in school still study on empty stomachs and some lack scholastic materials and because of this some are dropping out of schools.
3. Due to lack of meals at schools, the academic performance of some OVCs is relatively poor.
4. The project growth rate is low and some orphans and guardians are losing hope.  

Recommendation

An immediate intervention is required to support the project in order to rescue the orphans because children are the future leaders and workforce.

Testimony from the beneficiary

Isaac was born in 1997 and is now a 15 year boy whose parents (Medei Yokosofati) who died when he was only eight (8) years and was in primary two. The responsibility to care for this boy was taken over by the ground mother who is 61years, without sustainable income generation and a favorable shelter.  The grandmother is sickly and cannot manage to engage in subsistence income generation activities for survival.  The grandmother had kept this boy at home doing domestic work like fetching water and looking for food through working in other peoples’ gardens. The boy used to go even on stone quarries to crash aggregates.    KADO located him in Kagumu trading center on school days when he had gone to procure salt and a piece of soap for the grandmother.    

During interaction with masimo Isaac and the project officer. He revealed that he was at home with his grandmother and was not studying despite the existing universal primary school programme. He gave the details of the details of the grandmother and the location of his home.

 The project officer visited masimo and his grandmother and counseled both of them. The grandmother was rejecting masimo Isaac to go to school because he was the only resourceful person who could help her. After thorough counseling she allowed him to go to school on ground that the organization pay for all school dues and scholastic materials, including supporting her with essential commodities that masimo was able to provide.

Isaac joined spring of good hope primary school which is the nearest school.  He is primary seven this year and his performance is very good. He has been holding the first position in class since primary six.

  Isaac  is currently very happy and feels good. When you interact with him, his prayer is to become a doctor.  However, he vows to study to meet her expectations but only plays for her grandmother to live longer and the dead parent’s souls to live in eternal piece.

This story and the status of this boy is true and is used as a living story of what many orphans and vulnerable children are experiencing in the community

KADO provides psychosocial therapy, school meals and scholastic materials to masimo Isaac, and provided some basic treatment and essential commodities to the grandmother.   

The grand mother is improving and currently the organization is seeking funding to support her with a goat to begin rearing it for Masimo Isaac because masimo is joining secondary school next year.
