Summary of project activities

This is the fourteenth quarterly activity report of Kagumu Development Organization on Support to 320 orphans with improved goats in Uganda. This is a project under implementation by the Organization in Eastern Uganda, in the three Districts of Kibuku, Budaka and Pallisa with financial support from donors under Global Giving provision to the community. The organization together with beneficiaries is hereby expressing their appreciation to all donors for the support of the project. Global Giving team is appreciated for the wonderful work being done that has enabled the organization to receive support to manage the project. The report expresses quarterly project developments and therefore, compiled and disseminated to our stakeholders for their utilization. The report gives details on the current status of the orphans, challenges during project implementation, recommendations and testimony from at least a beneficiary.

Current status of Support 320 orphans with improved goats project

KADO is doing a commendable work of building the capacity of OVCs and their households in improved goats’ rearing through training, breeding and dissemination of improved goats to the selected OVCs and provision of advisory services. However, many Orphans and vulnerable children have not received the improved goats. The rate of breeding is low, because of limited breeder she-goats which has made the project have little impact on ground. Some of our OVCs face challenges of lack of school uniform, do not have access to school meals and at times Lack scholastic materials.

In the last quarter, the organization managed to implement the following;

1. Monitored project activities in 7 OVC households and met 19 OVCs
2. Provided treatment for 6 goats in 4 OVC households

Challenges

1. High cost of improved breeder goats

These improved goats are expensive and the organization cannot afford to procure them with the limited funding from our donors (Global Giving).

1. Increased OVCs going for child labour

The need to pay for meals at school, purchase of scholastic materials has prompted OVCs to go for child labour, early marriages leading to cross generational sex hence being at a high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

Recommendation

We request all donors to be part of the organization and have a helping hand to this   project for the good of these vulnerable children in the country.  

Testimony from one of our beneficiary.

This is a testimony from Patricia a daughter of late Omagon and Agnes of Olok village in Olok Sub County in Pallisa district, Eastern Uganda. Patricia is a 14 year old girl living with her guardian Sylvia. Sylvia is a 68 year old lady positively living with HIV/AIDs and currently on ARVs but not responding to the treatment, this condition forced Patricia to drop out of school while in primary five partly because of lack of scholastic materials and also to take care of her sick guardian.

While at home, Patricia was exposed to early sex, conceived and gave birth to a baby boy in that hard condition where she would hardly afford even her own basic needs like food at home. During the organization’s follow up on clients, the community helped to identify Patricia who interacted with our team in the field and expressed her plight to the organization. The organization decided to take her on and took her back to school, provided the guardian with a she goat to support the family.

Patricia is happy at school and promised to study hard upto secondary level where she would then go for a course in a technical institution. This is a true story and explains the work of KADO in relation to our project of support 320 OVCs with improved goats in Uganda.
