Dementia is a growing health challenge, particularly among the elderly population. In Imo State, many elderly people suffering from dementia face isolation, neglect, and lack of adequate care. Through our "Support 350 Old People with Dementia in Imo State" initiative, we are dedicated to providing much-needed care and support to this vulnerable population. This report outlines our efforts, funding received, and future prospects.
Funding Overview
This quarter, we received a total of $168 in funding to support our initiative:
$18 from GlobalGiving
$150 from the Social Impact Initiatives of the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation
These funds have been critical in providing immediate assistance and care to elderly individuals living with dementia in Imo State.
Achievements and Activities
1. Direct Support for Elderly Individuals
With the funds received, we have been able to provide essential care and support services for individuals with dementia. These services include:
Health monitoring: Regular check-ups to ensure the elderly individuals receive proper medical attention.
Medication and Treatment: Ensuring that dementia patients receive their prescribed medication and other necessary treatments.
Caregiver Training: We have conducted training sessions for caregivers to better support the elderly, teaching them methods for managing dementia and providing emotional support.
2. Community Outreach and Awareness
Our community outreach efforts have focused on raising awareness about dementia and its effects on families and communities. We conducted informational sessions for families, caregivers, and local health practitioners to ensure they understand the needs of dementia patients and how best to provide support.
3. Partnerships with Local Healthcare Providers
We continue to engage local healthcare facilities in providing better support for dementia patients, establishing partnerships to ensure that elderly individuals have access to necessary care and resources.
Financial Summary
The funds received have been used to:
Purchase medication and essential supplies for dementia patients: $95
Provide training for caregivers: $50
Community outreach (posters, materials, local transportation): $18
Total Funds Expended: $163
Balance: $5
Future Prospects and Plans
While the funding received has made a significant impact on supporting dementia patients, there is still a long way to go. Our future plans for this initiative include:
1. Scaling Up the Program
Our goal is to extend support to the full target of 350 elderly individuals with dementia in Imo State. To do this, we will need additional funding to cover the growing demand for care, medication, and training programs.
2. Collaboration with Health Institutions
We plan to expand our partnerships with local hospitals, clinics, and health organizations to provide more comprehensive care for dementia patients. By doing so, we hope to ensure that more elderly individuals have access to the medical care and attention they need.
3. Building Awareness and Advocacy
Dementia remains a widely misunderstood condition, and many elderly individuals do not receive the proper diagnosis or care. We will continue our advocacy efforts to raise awareness about dementia, educate families, and advocate for more robust dementia care programs in Imo State and beyond.
4. Sustainable Support Systems
In the long term, we aim to create a sustainable support system that includes dedicated caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community-based programs. This would involve setting up dementia care centers, providing ongoing caregiver education, and establishing dementia-friendly communities.
5. Fundraising and Partnerships
Moving forward, we will be actively seeking more donations and forming new partnerships with local and international organizations to help fund the project. We are hopeful that additional financial support will enable us to reach our target of providing quality care for 350 elderly dementia patients.
Challenges
While we have made significant strides in supporting elderly individuals with dementia, we continue to face several challenges:
Limited Funding: The number of individuals in need exceeds the available resources. Additional funding is critical to expanding the program.
Awareness and Stigma: There remains a lack of awareness and stigma surrounding dementia, making it difficult for families to seek help. Our advocacy efforts need to be further expanded to reach more people.
Caregiver Shortages: There is a shortage of trained caregivers, which affects the level of care provided to dementia patients. More caregiver training programs are needed to ensure high-quality care.
Conclusion
The "Support 350 Old People with Dementia in Imo State" initiative is making a meaningful difference in the lives of elderly individuals living with dementia. The funds received have enabled us to provide essential care and support, but there is still much work to be done. We are committed to expanding the initiative, raising awareness, and securing additional funding to ensure that dementia patients in Imo State receive the care and support they deserve.
We are deeply grateful to GlobalGiving, our donors, and partners for their generous contributions, which have made this progress possible. We look forward to continuing this vital work and to further expanding our efforts to support elderly individuals with dementia in the region.
