Women from Myanmar, Southern Thailand and the Philippines are determined to prevent violence against women and make a contribution to peace in their communities. With the goal of protecting their communities without the use of weapons, 25 women will be brought together to learn leadership skills through training and sharing experiences with each other. You can help these women protect themselves and their loved ones as they participate and advocate in local peace processes.
More than a decade has passed since the UN adopted SCR 1325 Women, Peace & Security to ensure the inclusion of women in all such processes. However, when critical decisions are made-about security, governance, justice, and more-women are often left out. The participants are determined to prevent violence against women and make a contribution to peace in their communities and sought assistance from NP in gaining needed skills. Supporters like you can help support these emerging women leaders.
Built on NP's methods of civilian protection in war zones, and in partnership with Thai Universities, 25 women from the 3 countries will assemble for training designed to build their skills, confidence and understanding of nonviolent methods. They will also map out women influencers in each country to recognize strengths and gaps in women's leadership roles. The exchange of experiences will generate new ideas that can be applied in the face of human rights violations in their own communities.
This training assists emerging community leaders to better contribute to their country's peace process as well as provide greater protection of women from gender-based violence. These efforts will help not only to resolve these issues, but increase trust among communities and authorities, de-escalate tensions between different ethnic groups and model nonviolent approaches to managing conflict. This leads to the building of an ethos of nonviolence that contributes to a more peaceful future.
