Summary

In Latin America, between 50 and 75% of living spaces are the result of a non-market production, developed by the inhabitants, with socio, cultural, environmental and economical benefits that conceives housing as a process that even creates bonds with the territory and community: the Social Production of Habitat (SPH). This project will support a Regional Working Group (RWG) of organizations and movements that seeks to broaden the recognition of SPH and realice the right to adequate housing.

Challenge

For 30 years, housing policies focused on the purchase of new housing from real estate leaving out the most vulnerable population. As a result, inhabitants have driven long and draining SPH processes with little to no support from the States. Although the RWG has managed to get several countries to support SPH, in many places it is not recognized and even criminalized. For that it is vital to support the actions of the RWG to advance in the realization of the right to adequate housing.

Solution

Through this project, the RWG will strengthen and increase actions that contribute to make SPH more visible as a solution for vulnerable people. Since its formation, the RWG has and will keep on encouraging the exchange of learning and collective advocacy actions through spaces for dialogue, systematization of good practices and technical support of housing production processes in order to make these efforts grow in scale and to connect with self-management and transformative experiences.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term this project seeks to advance in the resolution of the obstacles (administrative, legal, cultural, etc.) that the SPH faces through the strengthening of networks and collective and organized actions in the region, improving laws and practices to grow in scale this type of production and reach more people. All of this will contribute to an increase in access to the human right to adequate housing for millions of people in the region and an improvement in their living conditions.
