Conversations on habitat and climate justice

By Maria Silvia Emanuelli | Coordinator

Hybrid Forum on habitat and climate justice
Hybrid Forum on habitat and climate justice

The support provided has allowed us to cover some of the expenses required for the realization of the “Habitat crisis and climate change: from local responses to the international debate" Hybrid Forum, which took place on November 15 and 16 of 2023 under the coordination of different organizations, groups and institutions whose work is related to these subjects. This forum aimed to strengthen the exchange of experiences of urban and rural communities, alliance building and coordination among social actors in Latin America and other regions that work towards housing and habitat related rights to advance climate justice. Furthermore, this exchange encouraged the formulation of proposals that could be included in international debates on the matter. As part of the program, twenty experiences from ten Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru) were presented, many of which were focused on cases of Social Production of Habitat (SPH) processes that are respectful of nature. Additionally, we had the participation of representatives of international networks and bodies that enabled us to broaden the debate and provide clarification on some elements of the international panorama on climate, in which the experiences presented can be considered. The meeting ended with a series of follow-up agreements, such as the continuity of the articulation between organizations and groups; the organization of a follow-up activity to further the discussions; and the systematization of the experiences that were presented so that they can be used as inputs for advocacy strategies in regional and international spaces.
