Welcome to your first update on the HeroRATs for 2025!
Our HeroRATs have been busy detecting landmines and other unexploded remnants of war across the globe, as well as detecting tuberculosis (TB) in countries such as Tanzania and Ethiopia.
In the last quarter of 2024, the mine detection HeroRATs cleared 1,390,925 square meters of land, and detected 100 landmines, 80 explosive remnants of war and 17 cluster munitions across their countries of operation. Thank you so much for supporting this vital work to free communities from the fear of playing, farming and travelling in and around their homes.
By supporting APOPO, you are also supporting our ethos to employ local staff, create jobs, and provide a cost-effective solution to global humanitarian challenges. HeroRATs reduce landmine casualties and enable communities to utilize their land to farm, play and build important infrastructure, such as schools. HeroRATs TB detection means patients can access treatment sooner, reducing the spread of the deadly virus. All of this is only possible thanks to support such as yours. Thank you.
In other news, we were delighted to introduce our brand new HeroRAT for adoption Jane, named by wonderful wildlife hero Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, who visited our headquarters in Tanzania last year. HeroRAT Jane is training to detect illegally trafficked wildlife products, including pangolin scales, rhino horn, and elephant ivory. With your continued support, Jane can learn the skills required to make a difference and help disrupt wildlife trafficking networks.
Last time, we told you about our campaign to send our RescueRATs and the team to complete search trials in mock debris sites in Turkey in collaboration with the Search and Rescue organization, GEA. Our head of Search and Rescue Danielle Giangrasso has now arrived in Turkey with a small team to start building a permanent program base. It has been decided that the rats will not travel to the program until it is more established, and we will keep you updated on when the little heroes begin real-world training as RecueRATs!
Thank you so much for supporting our HeroRATs in their missions around the world. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at herorats@apopo.org. We would love to hear from you!
In the meantime, as always, thank you so much for your dedicated and generous support. Thanks to you, the HeroRATs are achieving so much, and we look forward to updating you on your support next time!
