HeroRATs Update and How You Can Win HeroRAT Art!

By Emma Mortiboy | Public Fundraising

HeroRAT, Imeldo working in Cambodia
HeroRAT, Imeldo working in Cambodia

Hello and welcome to the latest report on the impact of your support of the HeroRATs!

Alongside updates on how your support is making a difference, we also have some exciting news to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

From today (Valentine's Day!) until the 21st of February, you can bid on an original miniature HeroRAT masterpiece (see attached images)! Simply email herorats@apopo.org with your details, the canvas you'd like, and your highest bid.

First and foremost, thank you. Your support enables our HeroRATs to continue saving lives every single day.

In Cambodia, our operations have shifted inland, away from border regions where ongoing conflict still presents challenges. This hasn’t slowed our incredible HeroRATs, who continue to locate buried unexploded ordnance and explosives, freeing large areas of land for safe use.

In Angola, we formally concluded our 2025 operations at the end of the year with a final controlled detonation in the Municipality of Seles, Cuanza Sul province. Over the course of the year, APOPO teams safely recovered 716 explosive items through planned clearance activities and emergency responses following reports from local authorities and community members.

This final detonation marked the culmination of a year of coordinated work involving APOPO teams, national partners, and local leadership. All cleared land was independently inspected and certified by Angola’s National Mine Action Agency, ensuring it meets safety standards before being returned for civilian use, including farming, construction, and housing. This milestone highlights how sustained clearance efforts, community reporting, and national oversight work together to reduce risk and restore land safely.

Giant RATs?! More about the HeroRAT species

APOPO's HeroRATs are African giant pouched rats (Cricetomys ansorgei). Despite the name, these animals are very different from the brown rats most people associate with cities. African giant pouched rats belong to a separate group of African rodents and are named for the large cheek pouches they use to carry food, a natural adaptation that helps them gather and transport resources efficiently in the wild.

You may sometimes see this species referred to as the southern giant pouched rat in scientific or regional contexts, or hear them confused with Gambian pouched rats, which are a related but different species. African giant pouched rats combine an exceptional sense of smell with a calm temperament and a methodical working style. These traits make them ideally suited to the slow, careful searches required for safe and reliable landmine detection.

We are very excited about the year ahead, and with your continued support, these remarkable heroes can continue saving hundreds of thousands of lives around the world. Thank you so much, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you soon.
