Priyanka, aged 13, lives in a hilly, rural village called Jawalebaleswar, where her father and brother are labourers. As her father was earning so little, the family couldn’t survive, meaning her brother; Ojasvat, had to sadly drop out of school only aged 12, to help support the family. This is an example of when families are forced to choose survival over education, which shouldn’t be a choice anyone has to make.
Priyanka and her parents didn’t want the same for her, so she travelled two hours on foot to school. Due to the area being so hilly, there are no public transport services available, so walking was her only choice. This left her absolutely exhausted by the time she arrived and often too tired to study. Her grades were inevitably slipping, despite trying her hardest. Priyanka’s dream is to become a schoolteacher, but she couldn’t concentrate after her long, daily journeys.
Priyanka heard about NISD bicycle scheme, where children are offered bikes in order to help with their travels to school, so she applied. NISD staff soon visited her home and could see how her situation was affecting her and her schooling, so they provided her with a bicycle!
Priyanka is so happy, it cuts her travel time in half, and she can now devote maximum time to her studies, achieve her aspirations of becoming a schoolteacher and remove her family from the vicious cycles of poverty.
Thank you for your support.
