From the Ashes: A Family's Courageous Path to Heal

By Maryna Tereshchenko | Customer Experience Manager

Dear Supporters,

Every child we care for has a story marked by grief, resilience, and hope. And every one of those stories is being rewritten – thanks to you.

As of July 2025, 13,698 children across Ukraine are receiving support from the Children of Heroes Foundation. With 7 to 10 new children joining every single day, our mission continues to grow. And none of it would be possible without your incredible generosity.

A Family Rebuilding After War and Fire

Let us introduce you to Alyona, a devoted mother from Novoukrainka, and her two sons – Artur, 15, and Bohdan, just 2 years old.

In March 2022, Alyona’s husband, Volodymyr, volunteered to defend Ukraine. Though she was pregnant at the time, he didn’t hesitate – he felt it was his duty. Tragically, Volodymyr lost his life in November of that year, only briefly holding his newborn son during a short leave. Alyona managed to take just a few photographs – precious, now irreplaceable memories.

His death was ruled a result of heart failure by military commission, leaving the family in legal limbo. With no official recognition, they receive no state support, and the burden of survival has fallen entirely on Alyona’s shoulders.

They joined our Foundation in July 2023. Since then, we’ve supported them with nearly every form of aid we offer – financial assistance, food and hygiene kits, clothing, birthday gifts, educational tools, insurance, and even heating supplies to get through the cold months.

But in May 2025, the unimaginable happened again.

A fire tore through their home during the night, destroying almost everything – furniture, clothing, electronics, even the suit Artur planned to wear to his graduation. By a miracle, no one was hurt.

Today, they are safe, living temporarily with their grandmother, and beginning the long road to recovery once more. With your help, they’ve already replaced windows and doors and received emergency supplies.

This family refuses to give up – and because of you, they won’t have to.
