Hsiao-Chian was born with a prominent hemangioma shaped like a small butterfly on her right cheek near her nose. Like any new mother, Hsiao-Chian’s mom was deeply worried about the potential psychological and social effects this birthmark might have on her child. Determined to find answers and support, she reached out to Sunshine Foundation for guidance.

With our social worker’s encouragement, Hsiao-Chian’s mom sought medical consultations and immersed herself in research to better understand her daughter’s condition. Her primary goal was clear: to ensure Hsiao-Chian would thrive and grow up happy and confident.

However, balancing this journey with work and daily life was not always easy. At one point, Hsiao-Chian’s mom experienced intense stress from work, which occasionally spilled over into her interactions with Hsiao-Chian, leading to tension between them. Recognizing the need for change, Hsiao-Chian’s mom took a step back to reflect. She reminded herself of her daughter’s many wonderful qualities and apologized to Hsiao-Chian for the moments of frustration. Together, they would calmly discuss how to handle difficult situations better. These experiences taught both mother and daughter valuable lessons about managing emotions and fostering understanding.

Over time, Hsiao-Chian grew to embrace her unique appearance. When people asked about the red mark on her face, she confidently replied, “It’s my little butterfly!” If anyone commented that she looked unusual, she would proudly say, “This is my body, and I love it just the way it is.” Her confidence and self-acceptance became an inspiring example for others.

One day, while out with her mom, Hsiao-Chian suddenly asked to return home. Once there, she asked dejectedly, “Are people staring at me because I look strange?” Her mom gently explained, “Everyone looks different. Your sister has a Mongolian spot on her shoulder, your grandpa has a birthmark on his thigh, and I have a mole on my face. These differences make each of us unique.”

To help Hsiao-Chian build even more confidence, her mom created a special fabric storybook. In this tale, Hsiao-Chian’s parents rescue a butterfly prince in a garden. As a token of gratitude, the butterfly prince bestows Hsiao-Chian to them, marking her as the Butterfly Princess so that all the butterflies in the kingdom would recognize her. This imaginative story gave Hsiao-Chian a magical narrative to cherish and helped her embrace her identity even more.

At just 10 years old, little Hsin has already faced more challenges than many of us can imagine. Born with a rare condition called polycystic lymphangioma combined with a vascular tumor, her lower face and tongue are severely swollen. From the moment she was born, Hsin’s life was in jeopardy, requiring emergency intubation even before her umbilical cord was cut. By the time she was a month old, she had already undergone two major surgeries.

Over the past decade, hospital visits have become a constant part of Hsin’s life. The scars from her tracheostomy and gastrostomy are daily reminders of the battle she has fought with courage. Yet, the physical pain is not what burdens her the most—it’s the cruel stares and hurtful words from strangers that cut the deepest. A child still full of innocence, she has faced discrimination simply because of her appearance. Some have gone as far as to pull down her mask and comment, "Your mouth is disgusting." These remarks have left emotional wounds on both Hsin and her family.

When Hsin was preparing to enter school, our team at the Sunshine Foundation stepped in to offer comprehensive support. We worked closely with her and her family, providing psychological counseling and organizing school visits to educate her teachers and classmates. This helped reduce misunderstandings and rejection, allowing Hsin to bravely embrace her school life and form meaningful connections with her classmates.

Today, Hsin faces the world with a smile and a positive outlook. Her mother, who once feared taking her daughter out in public, has grown stronger with our support. She now encourages Hsin to proudly remove her mask and appreciate her own unique beauty. Hsin’s passion for art is also a testament to her resilient spirit—her vibrant, bold creations never fail to inspire those who see them. Her dream is to become an art teacher, sharing her love for art and helping other children find strength within themselves.

Reflecting on their journey, Hsin’s mother says, “Because of Hsin, I’ve become more compassionate; and because of Sunshine, I’ve become braver. I am deeply grateful to the Sunshine team for being our strongest support, giving us the courage to face the future.”
