Dear Friends,

Greetings from Seva Mandir!

Hope you are well. The monsoon has delayed here. The pre-monsoon rain two days ago was very refreshing and we are hoping have a great monsoon despite that our summer was not too hot this year. We will keep you posted on it.

With this letter I like to share with you about the trainings the village community receives here with your support to our project ‘Building Self Reliant Rural Communities in India’.

These trainings enable the community to have required skills and framework to chalk out their agenda for development. The common village fund that these communities have created, are a valuable financial resource and provide them a reason to come together, deliberate and organize their development agenda. For example, if the teacher in a school is not regular or if there are more students per teacher, the community will have discussions about it in their monthly village meeting. The possible solutions are sought and if needed, the community will make a demand for a new teacher in village local council. In some cases, the community will appoint a teacher on their own to ensure education for their kids.

In trainings to rural communities, the aim is to build confidence of rural communities so they can raise their concerns, deliberate on issues and seek possible solutions to resolve problems that affect them. A number of trainings are conducted including financial literacy, writing proposal for development work, participation of women in development discourse and various government schemes that are available. On one hand, these trainings build skills of the communities, on the other, working together on common development agenda help them understand the democratic values and processes. As a result, their confidence increases and they learn to demand claims from the government and understand the bureaucratic process that result.

During the reporting period, 1,674 people have been benefitted from various Government schemes. Some example are given below –

  • 353 old age people are receiving pension under the Old age pension scheme.
  • 381 people received electricity connection at their home.
  • 54 farmers got Kishaan Credit Card (The card provides affordable credit to farmers in India and it was started by the Government of India, Reserve Bank of India, and National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development since 1999).
  • 281 widows are getting pension of Rs. 500 under Widow Pension Scheme.
  • 273 people received their Caste certificate (Caste Certificate enables the person belonging to SC/ST/OBC/NT and minority communities to avail of the reservation facilities provided by the Government of India).
  • 29 handicap people received pension of Rs. 500 under Pension for physically handicapped.

These are some examples to explain how trainings and some hand holding support can be helpful to these rural communities. With your regular support, we reach out to many more people with trainings and capacity building workshops. Though organizing these trainings is an intangible input but the results are certainly very tangible and empowering.

I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about these trainings that you are supporting for villagers. If you have any questions, I will be very happy to answer. Many thanks once again for your support and we hope to see you someday here.

With regards,

Deepti
