In the tribal and rural village of Kotda block in South Rajasthan, 300 families depend on farming and labor for their livelihood. One day, a telecom company began digging lines through several families' fields without obtaining permission. Distressed by the situation, the families approached Sh. Ranaram, the President of the Village Development Committee.
The committee quickly confronted the contractor, who claimed to have obtained permission from the Panchayat. Doubting the validity of this claim, the committee took the matter to the tehsil office, where the Patwari confirmed that the land was private. The committee, along with the Patwari, negotiated with the contractor, securing a compensation of Rs 2500 for the damaged crops. Out of this amount, Rs 2000 was distributed among the affected families, while Rs 500 was added to the village fund.
Thanks to the swift action of the Village Development Committee and the support of generous donors, the issue was resolved fairly. This story from Kagwas village highlights the power of unity and effective local governance.
