Goldin Institute's Global Gather Alumnus, Alexander Gwanvalla, leads Community Green Engagement (COMGREEN), a non-governmental organization focused on sustainable environmental action and mitigating the impact of climate change in his native Cameroon. Now Alexander and the organization are struggling to confront the catastrophic impact of more than 60,000 Cameroonians being displaced by on ongoing civil war, and now Coronavirus. COMGREEN is in dire need food, medical supplies and safety gear.
In practical terms, constant gunfire and risk of other physical violence by warring groups makes it impossible for Alexander and his colleagues to reach out to community members on climate change issues.During last week's elections on February 9, separatists from the English-speaking part of the country imposed a six-day lockdown on all civilian movement and reiterated their demand that English-speaking senators and parliamentarians quit the national senate and parliament.
Community Green Engagement (COMGREEN) - Cameroon is a non profit, non governmental and humanitarian organization aimed at alleviating poverty and addressing climate change. The beekeeping project ,gardening, construction of a community center came about through a process of community consultation. Many stakeholders came together to discuss our most pressing problems and collectively come up with solutions. Alexander and his community allies continue to create impact but right now they need food.
The major goals of this project are to provide a new income source, while improving community life, restoring the environment, revitalizing the extinct bee community, and alleviating poverty through the training and support of local people in the practice of beekeeping.
