Overview: Maternal Healthcare and Family Planning in Nigeria
Nigeria faces significant challenges in maternal healthcare, with one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally—approximately 512 deaths per 100,000 live births. Access to quality maternal care is limited, particularly in rural areas, due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure, cultural barriers, and economic constraints. Family planning services also face obstacles, with only 17% of women aged 15-49 using contraception, primarily due to limited access, cultural and religious resistance, and lack of awareness. During the cause of our community outreach and sensitization, feelers we got from few women we interviewed was quite alarming.
