The gift of life begins with a mother. Yet in many communities across Nigeria, that gift is endangered by poor access to quality maternal healthcare, low awareness of family planning, and preventable newborn and child mortality.
At Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we believe that no woman should die while giving life, and no child should lose their future before it even begins. Our Maternal HealthCare & Family Planning in Nigeria project is a life-saving mission to educate, support, and empower vulnerable mothers, fathers, and communities in rural and underserved regions.
Current Activities: Community Sensitization and Mobilization
We are currently in the sensitization and mobilization awareness phase of our Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) outreach program. This stage is critical, as it lays the foundation for deeper community engagement and behavior change.
Key Activities Ongoing:
Community Mobilization: Engaging community gatekeepers, religious leaders, and women groups to foster trust and participation.
Awareness Campaigns: Hosting open discussions on the importance of antenatal care, family planning, immunization, and exclusive breastfeeding.
Home Visits: Conducting door-to-door outreach to identify pregnant women and nursing mothers in need of urgent attention.
Distribution of Educational Materials: Leaflets and flyers in local languages highlighting safe motherhood practices and child health tips.
Volunteer Training: Equipping local volunteers and peer educators with tools and knowledge to lead grassroots change.
Why This Matters
Nigeria accounts for 20% of global maternal deaths. Many of these are preventable with the right information and timely care.
Family planning services remain underutilized in rural areas due to myths, lack of access, or cultural barriers.
Children under 5 in low-resource communities face high risks of malnutrition, preventable diseases, and poor hygiene.
Our intervention targets these urgent gaps with compassion, clarity, and commitment.
Community Response & Prospects
We are encouraged by the warm reception and overwhelming interest from women and young mothers, many of whom are hearing accurate information on family planning for the first time. Fathers are also beginning to join the conversations, which is a critical cultural shift we aim to build on.
With your support, our next steps will include:
Organizing free antenatal and postnatal care sessions in mobile clinics.
Providing birth kits, nutritional supplements, and hygiene packs to expecting mothers.
Offering free family planning counseling and services through trained health workers.
Hosting MNCH community health fairs with interactive sessions and health screenings.
Special Appreciation to Our Donors
We would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to all our past and current donors. Your generous contributions have been the lifeblood of this project, enabling us to reach those who need help the most. Without your support, none of this would be possible.
In particular, we acknowledge the generous $350 donation we received from individual donors who have supported our work. This contribution has helped us continue our outreach activities and provide valuable resources to communities. You have not only invested in the health and well-being of mothers, children, and families, but you have also invested in the future of entire communities. Your belief in our mission has inspired us to push forward, even in the face of challenges.
We remain abundantly grateful for your ongoing partnership, compassion, and dedication to transforming lives. Together, we are making a tangible difference. May your kindness return to you a hundred fold.
In our next report, we will provide a detailed breakdown of how the funds have been spent, ensuring full transparency and accountability.
Appreciation & Call for Support
We sincerely thank GlobalGiving for the platform and guidance in amplifying our impact. We are also deeply grateful to our past and present donors who continue to believe in the power of grassroots transformation.
However, to scale this initiative and reach more mothers and children, we need your partnership now more than ever. Your contribution will help save lives, strengthen families, and create a healthier Nigeria—one mother and one child at a time.
Conclusion
This project is not just about health—it is about hope, dignity, and the right to live a full life. Through our Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health outreach, we are building a future where every woman survives childbirth, and every child has a chance to thrive. Together, let’s make that future a reality.
Best regards,
Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation
