Challenges deaf people face in our society

Imagine trying to learn a lesson in a classroom trapped inside of a clear sound-proof box. The only way you can gather the information is visually and you will be tested on what you’ve learned or were supposed to have learned – at the end of the day. Seems a bit unfair, doesn't it?

Like all other deaf people, the Deafnuri team members experienced unfair situations which we would like to share with you.

The leader of the team hadf a big interest in international development and because of discrimination and exclutions that she experienced, she wanted to share her story and change the society for all people like herself. But very soon she found that the stories and problems of deaf people were not interested and excluded in society and she was disappointed in reality.

Then she wanted to get together with other deaf people like herself who are also want to change the world and interested in international development, but she couldn't find them. So she decided to create a community for deaf people to learn and experience together about their rights and international development.

The other Deafnuri team member also experienced the discrimination when she was a student. The university did’t provide for disability people subtitles services to Internet lectures at University. So she repeatedly requested for the subtitles and only after lots of request letters and trying she was able to get some subtitle services lectures. Through this experience, she felt that ‘the deaf should also speak up and claim their rights’, and she with the current leader of the team started work together for the right of deaf people.

So now they are team which called Deafnuri that just started provide various services to deaf people.

*Deaf (deaf) + korean world of (Nuri), which meas world. Deafnuri means the world of deaf.

They desire to create a happy world where deaf people can speak out about their human rights. Deafnuri aims to create a more equitable and inclusive society by producing various barrier-free services, such as travel programs for people with disabilities and education to improve awareness of the rights of deaf people.
