"Deafnuri's Vision for a Barrier-Free World: An Interview on their Plans for GlobalGiving Donation"

Hello,

This is Dinora from Peace Winds Korea. I have brought you an interview from our brave and motivated people who are probably one in a million. And I am eager to share our conversation with you.

Let me remind you who Deafnuri is briefly. But before that, let me express our gratitude to Johnson & Johnson for their generous donation to this project. We will ensure that this amount is used to help the Deafnuri team create the world they want. Thank you for choosing us among so many causes and projects. We are honored that you chose to support our project.

  • The Deafnuri

In 2021, this team participated in our Peace Winds Korea project called “OpenLab of Youth Peace Economic.” This project supports various ideas for inter-Korean peace, and the Deafnuri team won the grant prize. After a long incubation period with Peace Winds Korea, they finally became a small organization that provides barrier-free services for special people, as they are themselves. So here is a part of our conversation with this wonderful team.

  • The interview

Question 1. How are you currently covering your business expenses?

Deafnuri: Interpretation costs accounted for a large portion of the Peace Economy Open Lab award amount, and the cost of purchasing photo copyrights in the production of prototypes. Usually 55,000 won per copy, and that applies only to paper books. If you want to make paper books and e-books. It is sold for about 75,000 won(50$) per sheet was partially used.

It's really pricy so last year around summer we participated in some project called the ‘Social Entrepreneur Fostering Project Preliminary Startup’and we bought about 20 of the photos with part of the business expenses we received. It's 20 chapters, so it's still an outrageous amount. The WFD(the World Federation of the Deaf) convention will be held in Jeju Island in the second week of July this year, and we have already planned to set up a booth there to promote Deafnuri. At that time, with the goal of selling as a finished product rather than a prototype, we are continuing to support until we are selected for another project to complete the remaining prototype production.

Question 2. What part do you lack financially while running your business?

Deafnuri: We have been selected for the OpenLab of Youth Peace Economic Project and are preparing to publish a sign language book that provides tourism information by raising business expenses. Prior to doing so, We would like to conduct a lot of preliminary field trips and research on the development of an agricultural guide curriculum, but We are lacking the ability and cost to proceed.

Question 3. If the needed amount will be collected on GlobalGiving, where and how do you plan to use the donation?

Deafnuri: The donation is intended to be used for key activities necessary for providing barrier-free educational travel content. Deafnuri's mission is to 'build an inclusive world where everyone is together.' Therefore, for this purpose, we have a vision of actively contributing to the creation of a barrier-free environment by providing educational tours led by farmers. In providing educational tours to non-disabled people and hearing people (a conceptual term opposite to deaf people), farmers must first train guides and develop language expertise. It is intended to be used in the development of related agricultural guide curriculum. In addition, it is urgently needed to purchase a lot of materials and photo copyrights to publish a more complete and informative book on North and South Korean sign language travel conversations that utilizes the differences between Korean handwriting and Korean sign language. We would like to use it for the related parts. Also, our customers are all important, but our core customers are the deaf. Among the deaf customers, we want to provide barrier-free educational travel content.

*Deaf (deaf) + korean world of (Nuri), which meas world. Deafnuri means the world of deaf.

They desire to create a happy world where deaf people can speak out about their human rights. Deafnuri aims to create a more equitable and inclusive society by producing various barrier-free services, such as travel programs for people with disabilities and education to improve awareness of the rights of deaf people.

Make an Big Impact with a donation. Support Deafnuri and change the world with them.
