Challenge

Iraq is a diverse country with people of many different ethnicities and faiths. Decades of war, terror and persecution have left people increasingly distrustful of one another. There are tensions between members of the Arab and Kurdish communities, the Sunni and Shiite communities, the Islamic and non-Islamic communities, as well as the Yazidi who feel abandoned by their neighbors and the government after being suppressed by the so-called Islamic State.

Solution

The Dialogue Program consists of three major projects. First, we developed The Youth Network for Peace and Dialogue which seeks to bring together young people and guide them into becoming leaders of cooperation in their communities. Second, we promote inter-religious dialogue with public visits to mosques, churches and temples with religious and spiritual leaders. Thirdly, we host encounter spaces where the public comes to speak with one another, share their ideas, and discover new friendships.

Long-Term Impact

The Dialogue Program is designed to promote long-term peace and stability throughout Iraq. By hosting workshops, events, and celebrations with community leaders we have been successful in reducing ethnic and religious barriers in communities. Meeting face-to-face, and having honest discussions is the only way make peace. Establishing networks of dialogue will help us reduce unnecessary violence and distrust between cultural and religious groups today and for the future.
