Rebuilding Khartoum: The Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Center

Khartoum is emerging from a conflict that has crippled its healthcare and education systems. While humanitarian aid has addressed urgent needs like food and medicine, a deeper gap remains: the loss of trained health professionals and the collapse of medical education infrastructure. Since April 2023, universities and clinical training systems in Khartoum have largely stopped functioning, cutting off thousands of medical students and health workers from structured learning. Without rebuilding this human capital, recovery efforts risk remaining temporary.

SAMA's response is to re-establish Khartoum as a hub for training, mentorship, and humanitarian coordination through a new Dr. Bushra Ibnauf Center for Learning and Humanitarian Support, modeled on centers already operating successfully in Port Sudan and Gedaref — which have collectively trained over 368 healthcare professionals in person and reached 1,848 more through virtual platforms.

The Khartoum center is currently in its pre-launch, infrastructure-readiness phase, with a target launch date of November 1, 2026. To date, we have secured the site — SAMA's existing Khartoum Office on 60th Street — and completed an infrastructure assessment confirming the facility is structurally sound, with water supply and fiber-optic internet already available. What remains is installing solar power, completing minor repairs, and furnishing the space. Program design is finalized around three components: the Sudan Future Leaders Program, the Project ECHO SuperHub for virtual mentorship with international experts, and infrastructure to support ongoing humanitarian coordination.

Once operational, the center aims to train at least 100 healthcare professionals in person and reach 500 more virtually in its first year, while certifying at least 20 emerging leaders through the Sudan Future Leaders Program.
