Ensuring drinking water security, by means of equitable access to affordable water of improved quality and adequate quantity, is one of the greatest global development challenges today. Bangladesh, a developing country in South Asia, has provided improved water sources to >97% of its population. However, safely managed water services are inadequate, covering less than 40% of the total population.
The Sundarbans Coastal region of Bangladesh is disaster prone area and frontline of global climate change due to its geographic location. The Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest in the world which is a UNESCO declared Natural World Heritage site and RAMSAR wetland site. Almost 3.5 million coastal people depend on its natural resources. Majority of the population of this region are poor and their education level is not satisfactory. There are so many social and environmental problems existed in this region.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is trying to provide safe drinking water to the climate vulnerable deprived Sundarbans coastal community. BEDS has been working since 2015 to alleviate the drinking water crisis in the coastal areas. In the meantime, the pond has been re-excavated and by using local technology pond sand and filter (PSF) system has been installed to collect rain water. Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System has been set up to enhance the quality of water. A community-based sustainable water business model has been introduced for its sustainable and long-term management. BEDS has also installed 35 water wells in the Sundarbans coastal villages in 2021. Now we are installing another 8 water wells at a time in the different villages in the coastal area. As a result, drinking water crisis for the coastal people is going to be solved day by day.
We would like to thank all our donors for their amazing and continuous support for the coastal deprived people. We are requesting all our donors to start monthly recurring donation by clicking the following link;
