Summary

Around 73 percent of the people in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh are deprived of drinking water. It is a massive crisis in the coastal region of Bangladesh due to increasing of salinity both ground and surface water. So far, BEDS has supported more than 9000 villagers of 11 villages with safe drinking water through re-excavating ponds, establishing solar based pond sand and filter system as well as Reverse Osmosis (RO) system with Water ATM and installing water wells.

Challenge

Majority of the coastal villagers drink pond water directly without purification; so, they frequently suffer from water borne diseases. Mainly women and girls collect drinking water far away from their residence. Villagers fail to use tubewell because of the extreme salinity in ground. During summer season ponds get dried. Number of freshwater ponds is not enough for the villagers to meet up their drinking water demand. They do not have enough capacity to reserve the rainwater.

Solution

BEDS has been working to provide safe drinking water among the villagers. Through our initiatives, we have re-excavated ponds for preserving rainwater and install Ponds Sand Filter (PSF) systems (local technology) for water purification. Install Reverse Osmosis (modern technology) using Solar energy for reducing the salinity and improve the quality of the water. We also set up Water ATM for the proper management and long term sustainability of the system.

Long-Term Impact

12000 people from 3000 coastal families will get safe drinking water facilities continuously from this initiatives. So, drinking water crisis and water borne diseases will be reduced, water collection time of the women will be also reduced so social security and safety of the rural women will be ensured.
