Safe drinking water supply for poor coastal people

Drinking water crisis is a burning issue in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh. People of that region are the worst victim of safe drinking water shortage. They have to depend on rain water and pond water. In summer, water level goes to the bottom of the pond and sometimes ponds get dried. The coastal communities are not financially capable enough to buy mineral water. So, they have to walk for a long distance to collect drinking water from ponds. They usually don’t purify water and drink it directly. So, they fall in different waterborne diseases.

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is a community based non- profit, non-government and development organization. BEDS has been working in the Sundarbans coastal region since 2013 for the socio-economic development of the coastal people. BEDS is trying to provide safe drinking water to the climate vulnerable underprivileged Sundarbans coastal community since 2015. We have re-excavated 3 ponds and established Solar Pond Sand and filter system and supported 4594 villagers. But due to the salinity of that water, BEDS is trying to raise the required fund to support those people with desalinated water (3 desalination system).

Realizing the situation and according to the request of the deprived communities, BEDS started working for establishing Reverse Osmosis water purification system with Water ATM in Paschim Dhangmari and Uttor (North) Banishanta village. Two 500 liter/hour Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems with Water ATM are installed by using the existing facilities (Solar Pond Sand and Filter system). As a result around 20% people of the Banishanta Union are now getting access to pure drinking water. After installing the Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems water contaminated diseases like cholera, dysentery, jaundice etc are ‍about to disappear. Recently we have distributed 200 water jars among the villagers.

BEDS is now trying to raise fund from GlobalGiving platform. Target grant of this project is 30,560$. So far, 4,754$ is raised from 37 admirable donations.

We are extremely grateful to the donors for being with us. And we expect that they will continuously help us for what we are aiming at.
