Safe drinking water demand is increasing with the increase of population in Bangladesh. There is water everywhere in the Sundarbans coastal region. But the water is saline; it is not fit for drinking. Here deep tube wells could not be installed as there was no soil layer in the area and there were problems in shallow tube wells. As a result, most of the people suffer from various kinds of water contaminated diseases. They cannot afford to buy mineral water because they live from hand to mouth.
BEDS has been trying to provide safe drinking water to the climate vulnerable underprivileged Sundarbans coastal community since 2015. We have re-excavated 3 ponds and established Solar Pond Sand and filter system. BEDS has installed 2 Reverse Osmosis water purification systems with Water ATM in Paschim Dhangmari and Uttor Banishanta village. 7 water wells have also been installed. So, more than 9000 coastal villagers are getting safe drinking water from our service. Now we are planning to install 8 more water wells in different coastal villages.
As a result the 45% people of the Banishanta Union are now getting access to pure drinking water. But this is not sufficient for the large coastal community. Now we are trying to ensure safe drinking water to 100% people of Banishanta Union. We have a great desire to supply safe water door to door. After installing the Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems and water wells, water contaminated diseases like cholera, dysentery, jaundice etc are about to disappear from the supported villages.
Impact: As a result the 45% people of the Banishanta Union are now getting access to pure drinking water. But this is not sufficient for the large coastal community. After installing the Reverse Osmosis Water Purification systems water contaminated diseases like cholera, dysentery, jaundice etc are about to disappear. Recently we have distributed 200 water jars among the villagers. We are trying to supply pure drinking water in whole coastal area.
Success Story: I am Mr. Bacher and I live in Paschim Dhangmari Village. I take water from the water ATM of BEDS. Now we are getting the world class purified RO water. My family members are drinking safe drinking water. Before my daughter used to affect by several water born disease like diarrhea, typhoid. But now she drinks the safe water and safe from the diseases. We are very happy to get the safe drinking water.
