Summary

High up the steep and sandy volcanic ash slopes of Mount Abang in East Bali, Manikaji children once had no hope of education. Everybody was illiterate before the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) opened a school in 2001. Since then, we have educated over 340 children, sent four to university, and introduced dryland permaculture classes for sustainable farming. This project will ensure that Manikaji children, aged 7-19, continue receiving quality education and opportunities for a brighter future

Challenge

Access to education in this area is severely limited as the nearest government primary and middle schools are 6 km away, a challenging two-hour walk down a steep and winding dirt road; and the closest high school is over 20 km away, with no public transport. And government schools do not provide extracurricular classes - or sustainable agriculture/farming classes. Thus, EBPP School is the sole educational institution accessible to these remote Manikaji mountain families

Solution

Your support will enable us to continue providing free, high-quality, and integrated education to school-age children that integrates academics with essential life skills on computer, nutrition, reproductive health classes, and job & university readiness. Through dryland permaculture and agroforestry, we teach students how to restore their dryland, grow nutritious vegetables, fruit trees, crops and build sustainable livelihoods, empowering them to uplift their entire community

Long-Term Impact

Your support has empowered our educated Manikaji high school graduates with the tools to make balanced choices for their futures and break free from generational poverty by either starting a business, working overseas, pursuing higher education, etc. Through sustainable farming techniques introduced in 2023, they've learned to regenerate their previously arid farmland, ensuring food security and economic stability for future generations. Together, we can transform lives, one student at a time
