The Fundamental Right to Education
The right to education, equally accessible to all human beings regardless of gender, race, religion, or any immutable characteristic, is at the heart of Action for Development’s (AfD) initiatives. AfD champions the belief that all children of Afghanistan should have fair and equal access to education, a crucial driver for a child’s comprehensive development—physically, psychologically, socially, and intellectually. Beyond individual growth, education serves as a cornerstone for societal advancement, contributing to public health, economic development, social mobility, poverty eradication, reducing child labor impact, and promoting gender equality, thereby establishing it as a vital economic and social right.
AfD’s Contribution to Education Among Afghan Children
Understanding the profound impact of education, AfD has dedicated efforts through the Support for Marginalized Kabul Children program to ensure equitable educational access. This program caters to orphans, street-working children, and girls who contribute to their family’s income by working at home, targeting those who are economically vulnerable. By offering free education, stationery, and daily meals, AfD aims to enhance these children’s literacy and numeracy skills, prepare them for integration into the public school system, and provide support vital to their success.
Currently, AfD operates three schools in Kabul, supporting 348 students—166 girls and 182 boys—in learning Mathematics, Islamic Studies, Dari Language, and Social Skills. Beyond academics, the program encourages physical activity, as 52 boys participated in football training over the last quarter.
Recent Achievements and Progress: A Quarterly Update
In the past quarter, the Working Children School has seen significant achievements:
- Implementation of a tailored curriculum across three centers in Kart-e Char and De-Afghanan centers in Kabul, and Charekar center in Parwan Provinces, following which students were assessed, passed their quarterly tests, and advanced to the next level.
- Teachers received comprehensive training on educational methodologies, lesson planning, assessment, evaluation, and fostering students’ social and emotional skills.
- Engagement with parents and families through meetings and focused group discussions (FGDs) provided valuable insights from the community, enhancing the program’s effectiveness.
- Provision of winterization aid to 220 families, delivering essential supplies such as rice, oil, and coal to support them through the winter months.
- Consistent distribution of stationery to students, tailored to their needs, ensuring their educational journey is uninterrupted.
AfD’s commitment to education reflects a dedicated endeavor to close the educational gap for Afghanistan’s most vulnerable children, ensuring they have the foundational tools for a brighter future.
